Hair Removal Techniques - Depilatories (Creams & Lotions)
Depilatory creams and lotions, which remove hair at the skin’s surface, have become the most common form of at-home hair removal over the past 30 years (see History of Hair Removal). Although painless, it traditionally has been a messy and rather smelly process. The active ingredient, a Thioglycolic Acid, releases a pungent odor when it is exposed to air, rubbed between the fingers and/or when it touches the body.
Depilatory creams and lotions have a more feminine connotation than shaving, and come in various strengths formulated for specific areas of the body. However, because the hair is chemically dissolved at the surface of the skin, the effect is similar to that of a razor: the hair grows back thicker. Via Marzena
